Hello and welcome to WikiVitals a new unoficial site dedicated to reporting on the vital statistics of Wikipedia. Official statistics are available at stats.wikimedia.org however these have not been updated for the English edition of the Wikipedia since October 2006. As such the English edition is currently the focus of statistic generation here, but we hope to expand to cover other editions in the future.

This is a brief outline of methods used and the assumptions made, which differ in places to the methods used for the official statistics.

• The database exports provided at downloads.wikimedia.org are used to build the statistics.
• All pages not in one of the following namespaces is considered an article for the purpose of the statistics. This differs from the official statistics that require an article to have at least one internal link. The notable difference is that these stats include redirect pages in the main namespace. All articles in these namespaces are excluded:
• Talk
• User & User talk
• Wikipedia & Wikipedia talk (used for discussion of Wikipedia policy)
• Category & Category talk
• Template & Template talk
• Image & Image talk
• List & List talk
• Help & Help talk
• MediaWiki & MediaWiki talk
• Deleted pages are not included in the statistics. If a page has been deleted it's creation and any changes that were made on that page are not included in the statistics.
• It's early days, these statistics have not rigorously verified so should be taken with a pinch of salt, however they are believed to be sufficiently accurate for general interest.
• For graphs regarding numbers of Wikipedians only edits made by logged in users are considered.
